Our Rich Past

The county and bay called Grays Harbor is located on the Olympic Peninsula on the coast of Washington State, 49 miles west of Olympia, 109 miles southwest of Seattle, and 142 miles northwest of Portland. It was named for Captain Robert Gray. In 1792, Gray was the first "Hoquate" (Indian dialect word meaning "white man") to sail into this harbor. He and his crew were on a commerce venture aboard the ship Columbia Rediviva. Captain Gray, sailing the Columbia, was also the first American to circumnavigate the world.

The Quinault Indians first encountered Spanish conquistadors in 1775 when the Spaniards raised a cross north of the harbor between Pt. Grenville and Moclips (in Grays Harbor County) claiming the area for Spain. Subsequent explorers claimed the land for Russia, England, and the United States. British Captain George Vancouver sailed by the harbor on his Washington Coast exploration in 1792.
